Review:

The first time I read the synopsis of Delirium, I became super eager to pick it up. The concept was just so intriguing, and it really made me wonder, what would our world look like if love was forbidden?

I think Lauren Oliver delivered this concept super well, and it had everything I was looking for in a good sci-fi! This book had great characters, had me sitting at the edge of my seat, and did I mention the world’s most amazing plot?!😱I know that after reading this one, I am exuberant to read the rest of the series, and all of Oliver’s other YA books.

For a summary, Delirium centres around 17-year old Lena, who is due to get the ‘cure’ on her 18th birthday, which is coming up soon. In her society, love is considered forbidden, and it is a delirium that needs to be fixed in everyone by the time they turn 18. Lena is excited to be cured, that is, until she unexpectedly falls in love, right before her scheduled procedure. Will Lena be able to hide, or will she have to risk her life to feel the way she wants?

Lena could get a bit frustrating and annoying at times, but nevertheless, she was still a character I really liked, and I found a very strong female lead in her. Even though it was severely against the law to fall in love, she still did, and with a passion, too. Yes, she did understand that she was just about to get cured. Yes, she did understand the risks of falling in love. But did that stop her from doing so? NO!! I love characters like this who are easily able to take risks and stand up for their rights, and Lena is absolutely no exception in my book😊.

Next, I’d like to talk about the boy Lena fell in love with, Alex. I also thought he was really strong, and that he was such a good guy, too. I was so surprised about how easily he was able to resist not being allowed to fall in love, and I absolutely loved his passion for Lena as well. They were honestly a great couple, and I look forward to reading more about the two in the next books.

All in all, this was a really interesting, captivating book about a society where falling in love isn’t allowed, and I enjoyed it so much! It had some of the best, strongest, and bravest characters I’ve ever read about. I’d recommend it to any teen looking for a sci-fi delivering just plain awesomeness, because that’s what is found in this book, plus EVEN MORE. I am now in dire need of reading the rest of the series! This was my first Oliver novel, and I think it’s pretty safe to say that it did NOT disappoint.
