How I Found Out About It: The first time I read (well, listened to) it was a couple years ago for a global read-aloud at school, meaning that my teacher read it out loud to the class, and we collaborated with a class in another country to share our thoughts on it!
Review: I loved this book soooooo much, I can barely explain my love for it in words! I really enjoyed it the first time I listened to it, but it was even better reading it by myself afterwards! It’s basically about a girl in middle school named Melody, who has cerebral palsy and can’t walk and talk, but she is super smart. I mean SUPER smart. She has an elephant’s memory, but she can’t express that due to her inability to do some of the most basic things. For example, as a child, when she wanted something, she would have to scream and wail, but her parents would misconceive that as just frustration, so Melody wouldn’t be able to get her way. This book is about finding who Melody is, and where she stands in the world. Before, Melody was just known as that girl with cerebral palsy, and now she, her peers, and mentors, learn that that label doesn’t define her, and that she is actually much more than that. From this story, I learned that even though people with disabilities may look and act different, they are just like any other person on the inside, and that all they need is their chance to shine. If you want to know what Melody’s chance was, I suggest you read the book, because there is no reason why you shouldn’t! This inspirational, moving book should be on everybody’s TBR list, no matter if you are a middle grader or an adult, because you cannot miss this one!
