Review:

Upon reading We Were Liars, I had read mixed reviews about it- some absolutely in love with it, and some absolutely despising it with a passion. I have to be honest- going into this book, I was so scared I’d hate it, and I think it’s safe to say that I didn’t, but nor did I LOVE it.

I am only going to give you a tiny synopsis for this book, because I agree with many that it’s safest to enter the book blind. Okay, so this revolves around Cadence, who was in an accident a couple summers earlier on a tiny island, where she’d lost some relatives. She remembers next to nothing about it, so she relies on her remaining relatives, nicknamed the “Liars,” to tell her what happened, but hence their nickname, they often lie, but Cadence is still determined to find the truth elsewhere.

I thought the characters of this book were only okay, which surprises me, considering the fact that I love Ruby Oliver, the protagonist of another book series by E. Lockhart. There were just a lot of characters in this book, thus I found it hard to keep track of all of them.

Our protagonist, Cadence, was pretty bland, if I do say so myself. There wasn’t too much structure to her, and if you were to ask me about her in a month from now, I probably couldn’t tell you much. Seriously, as I’m writing this, I only finished the book last night, and I could barely tell you anything about her now, so imagine in a month!

The plot seemed like it was flying all over the place, which just did not fancy me. It got confusing at times, too, but I feel like the ending was good at wrapping it all up. One thing I loved about this story was the writing; as always with Lockhart’s books. I loved how she experimented with a bunch of different styles, instead of just sticking to one!

All in all, We Were Liars was not my favourite book, but then again, I didn’t hate it. Some parts were very captivating, but others were simply blah. I’d recommend this to lovers of thrilling, deep stories who don’t mind a plot that is thrown all over the place, because I can assure you that you will like this book- notice how I said like.
